Vermont ranked Greenest State in Nation!

Wednesday, March 30th, 2011

Rural VermontThe website 24/7 Wall St ranked Vermont as the Greenest State in the Nation, largely due to its green  policies, low population and small number of factories.  As described by the website, Vermont “releases the fewest carcinogenic toxins and has the smallest carbon footprint in the country”.

…And yet, Vermont still has world class employers like Burton Snowboards, Fletcher Allen Health Care, IBM, GE Capital, Martin Marietta, Dealer.com,  Teljet, and Twincraft!

…And it’s consistently rated one of the Best Places to Raise a Family! Tie that together with nationally ranked colleges and universities like UVM and Middlebury, cultural venues such as the Flynn Performing Arts Center and Shelburne Museum, beautiful skiing & hiking opportunities everywhere you look, and – don’t forget the Sixth Great Lake of the U.S. – Lake Champlain! No wonder why people choose to live in Vermont!

Burlington, VT wins Sustainable Community Development Award and State of Vermont ranked healthiest in America!

Wednesday, December 8th, 2010

Burlington, VT has been selected as the 2010 winner of the The Home Depot Foundation’s Awards of Excellence for Sustainable Community Development (small city category). As described on the Home Deport Foundation website, this award “recognizes public-private partnerships that have successfully developed projects and/or initiatives that promote and exemplify a more sustainable community.” Click here to see the video filmed in Burlington, VT. The driving force behind this award, Burlington’s Legacy Project (first developed in 1999), was developed based on thousands of resident’s input and serves as a guide to Burlington’s economic growth, environmental and social equity, and to ensure quality education for all.

Also – as I write this, I have learned that once again, Vermont has been ranked as the healthiest state in America according to America’s Health Rankings. Specific criteria that kept Vermont at the top of the list included high rates of graduation from high school, ready access to prenatal care, wide health insurance coverage, few children living in poverty, adequate availability of primary care physicians & public health spending, and a decrease in the prevalence of smoking & deaths from cardiovascular disease.

These two awards are shining examples of why Burlington, VT is one of America’s most livable cities!

Jet Blue CEO says Burlington, VT is his favorite destination!

Monday, November 29th, 2010

David Barger, CEO for Jet Blue airlines, recently told NPR’s Jeremy Hobson that, of all the destinations JetBlue flies to, Burlington, VT is his favorite.  When asked why, he said “You feel you’re really back to nature in a major way. It’s great quality of life in Burlington, Vt.”
I couldn’t agree more! It’s good national recognition for Burlington, and a reminder to those of us that live here that we are truly lucky to live, work and play in this spectacular location. I like to say we have a great lake in our front yard and great Mountains in our backyard. In between, where we live, we have world class culture: Flynn Performing Arts Center, top quality health care at Fletcher Allen (FAHC), and educational institutions that are ranked nationally (UVM). All this within an hour’s flight to major metropolitan cities.

What more could you ask for?

Flynn Theatre welcomes new Executive Director

Thursday, November 18th, 2010

I am proud to serve on the Board of Burlington’s Flynn Center for the Performing Arts. The Flynn is one of New England’s premier performing arts centers. It is also an architectural gem, a beautifully refurbished  art Deco theater which was awarded with an Outstanding Historic American Theatre Award in 2007.

This year, The Flynn welcomed a new Executive Director, John Killacky. John formerly managed the Arts and Culture Program for the San Francisco Foundation. He is a passionate promoter of arts & culture as essential ingredients to healthy, thriving communities. John  is off and running- I just came from our monthly board meeting and he is pushing all of us to  “think outside the box” and be creative. Whether it is with programming, fund-raising,  committee structure’s  or new ideas for development, John is bringing in fresh ideas, new energy and pushing all of us to reach for the stars!

The Flynn is lucky to have him!
